Some rules are meant to be broken…especially when they’re outdated fashion codes that don’t hold up in 2021. When it comes to fashion, don’t let anybody tell you what you can and cannot do. To that effect, today’s post is dedicated to the debunking of a few widespread fashion myths. Here at cabi, our mission is to expand the possibilities of your wardrobe, and the last thing we’d want is for silly, antiquated rules to limit you or hold you back. We want to instill a sense of confidence in all our followers and encourage you to go for it…whatever “it” may be.
There’s no one better to help us shut down these fashion myths than cabi’s Executive Fashion Director, the one and only, Becky Jantzen. With her help, we can throw these rules out the window and focus on perfecting our personal styles. Keep reading to learn why you can let go of these old-fashioned ideas!
You can’t wear white after Labor Day
This dated, arbitrary dress code has no place in today’s world. In the late 19th century, high-society women turned to fashion to set themselves apart from the nouveau riche, creating an insider versus outsider dynamic by manipulating fashion trends. No one in 2021 should feel like they need to follow this old-fashioned rule. Think of your summer white jeans as snowy winter jeans. Pair them with oversized cozy sweaters and don’t think twice!
Stripes make you look wider
Quite the contrary, in fact. Studies have proven that a horizontal stripe actually fools the eye into thinking someone is taller and leaner. There is something about the stripe pattern that creates a lengthening illusion and distracts the eye. Opt for narrower stripes as opposed to wide stripes to achieve this effect.
Classics are more important than trends
Don’t let yourself get stuck in this rut. Sure, classics have their place in your foundational wardrobe, offering a selection of timeless pieces that serve as your staples, but trying new trends is the spice of life! Adding some fresh ideas into your closet is imperative, so long as you choose well-made and simple styles that will last.
You can’t mix silver with gold
Au contraire! Believe it or not, it’s much more fashionable to mix your metals! Accessorizing is all about mixing and matching, frankly. You can also consider mixing your delicate jewelry with your chunky jewelry, sentimental lockets with over-the-top enamel pieces…you get the idea. The sky’s the limit—have fun with it!
Fashion is superficial
We’re shutting this one down right here, right now. For centuries, people have turned to fashion as a way to blend into their communities or set themselves apart, making it an important social phenomenon. Fashion is an ancient art form and is more than just clothes that cover your body. The pieces you wear can tell a story, showcase your personality, and mirror your mood. Fashion is not superficial, it’s key to our existence and well-being!
